Start with one verified feature
A creative angle is the lens through which you explain the same product behavior. A matrix helps a founder compare situations and messages without inventing additional features. Write the audience, one supported feature and the evidence you can show first. Then explore a small number of angles rather than a large list of interchangeable hooks.
For this fictional exercise, NorthStar Notes lets a team open a project call note and read a next-step section. This assumption illustrates the method; it is not a customer result.
Draft three angles from the same facts
Frustration angle: “the call ended and the next step is somewhere in the notes.” Show the note and the relevant section. This addresses a task without claiming every viewer has the problem.
Discovery angle: “wait, the next-step section is in the same note.” Show the section as the line appears. This makes sense only if the real product actually places it there.
Use-case angle: “before the follow-up, open the project note and check the next step.” Show the action in sequence. It explains a practical use without implying that a follow-up is automatically generated or sent.
| Angle | Opening | Proof to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Frustration | The next step is somewhere in the notes | A real note and its next-step section |
| Discovery | The section is in the same note | A readable product view |
| Use case | Check the note before a follow-up | A short sequence showing the action |
| Unsupported angle | It sends everything automatically | Do not use without verified feature and proof |
Pair each angle with an appropriate format
A reaction followed by real app footage can show the discovery. A wall-of-text overlay can describe the frustration, provided it is readable over the chosen footage. A slideshow can explain the use case one step at a time. These are planning options, not proof that any format performs better.
Write the actual opening, supporting proof and viewer action for each option. If two angles have the same opening and same proof, combine them; changing a few adjectives does not create a useful independent concept.
Choose one testable revision
Review all assertions against the product. Avoid fictional testimonials, automatic features not present in the app and unsupported savings. Make the first version using footage and content you have permission to use, then record the exact revision you want to compare next.
When examining results, note platform, audience, timing and available measures. Small or unequal samples and distribution differences make causal conclusions uncertain. The matrix records creative decisions; it does not predict reach.
