Give the first words a single job
The opening overlay should point toward the feature or task the next shot reveals. It is not a place to summarize every product benefit. Write the actual screen action first, then use a short line that prepares the viewer to understand it. The following examples are fictional creative plans for a note-taking SaaS product, not tested ads or customer quotes.
The assumed feature is a call note containing a next-step section. A real founder must replace this assumption with a feature the actual app can show.
Write and compare complete pairs
Pair A: opening words “wait, the next steps are right here” followed by a screen recording that opens the call note and reveals the next-step section. Pair B: “the call ended. now what?” followed by the same screen, with a brief label “open the call note.” The first names the discovery; the second introduces the task.
A mismatched pair says “my follow-up sends itself” over a recording that only shows a note. The text implies automation and sending that the screen does not prove. Replace it with a supported phrase or demonstrate the actual verified feature.
| Opening words | Next shot | Check |
|---|---|---|
| “wait, the next steps are right here” | Open the note and show the section | Feature is visible and real |
| “the call ended. now what?” | Open the call note | A bridge label supplies context |
| “my follow-up sends itself” | A saved note | Remove unsupported sending claim |
| Approved wording | Final export | Compare exact text and line breaks |
Keep the selected words unchanged through editing
Once the wording is approved, store it as exact text with its capitalization, punctuation and line breaks. Add it in an editable text layer, then compare the export against the approved version. Do not ask a video model to render precise words and assume spelling will be correct.
Place the overlay where it remains readable without hiding the presenter or product control. If a bridge label is needed, treat it as separate text rather than changing the meaning of the opening.
Review the promise and proof together
Watch the first two shots on a phone without pausing. Ask a reviewer what the opening promised and what the product actually showed. If the answers differ, adjust the words or record a clearer action. Remove personal claims or quantified outcomes unless the speaker and evidence support them.
Use sanitized product footage and permissioned assets. A short reaction may create curiosity, but it does not guarantee views or make a fictional customer experience true.
